Whether you think of yourself as a creative individual or not, creativity is ESSENTIAL for your well-being. Oftentimes, “creativity” brings to mind artistic forms of expression such as singing, dancing, drawing or other fine arts. While these all do represent creative outlets, they are only part of a much bigger picture.
Creativity, in true meaning, is the ability to create things; anything. It is having the capacity to draw connections between existing ideas and to come up with fresh solutions to ever-present problems. A common misconception is that you have to reinvent the wheel; to create or do something that has never been done before — something complex and completely original.
In reality, nothing is completely original. All creative work BUILDS off of ideas that came before. You could even argue that the best ideas are often those that offer new perspectives on familiar concepts. Once you are able to comprehend and accept this, it is easy to see that creativity is not just about creation, but rather innovation and transformation.
Creativity can have a significant impact on your health, as research shows that creative people are happy people; people that are more open-minded, confident, self-expressive and more likely to be true to themselves. The act of creating strengthens and builds new neurological pathways, which allows you to percieve situations in alternate ways, improves your ability to understand other perspectives and people, and gives you the time and space to process and release your thoughts and emotions, ultimately reducing stress levels, anxiety and depression. Engaging in a creative activity helps you to see the world in broader and more dynamic way, affecting all aspects of your life.
Creativity is our “life energy” and it needs to be released to keep energy flowing and keep you healthy and happy (in the same way that expending energy through exercise does). There is NO ONE ELSE in this world that can do exactly what you do, how you do it — each of us has a unique presence; a presence we are responsible for embracing. If you choose to IGNORE your creative needs, simply because you don’t think of yourself as a creative individual, then you are also ignoring your NEED for expression and CONSCIOUSLY choosing to putting your own health and happiness by the way side.
Creativity is truly a part of our physical, emotional and spiritual makeup and it desires to be explored and expressed. While many people are in tune with their body and listen to their intuition, when it comes to creativity, there are just as many people who don’t know where to begin. There is NO right way, just START. Find a way to get creative that speaks to and satisfies you, that gives your life more meaning. EVERYONE is creative, it is IMPOSSIBLE not to be.
Keep in mind that creativity is NOT about others and what they may think — it is about self-expression and meeting your own needs. It serves as a way of increasing not only your health, but your happiness. Channel that energy and do it for YOU.
